Linguistics for Academicians (joke)
The following list of phrases and their definitions might help you understand the mysterious language of science. These special phrases are also applicable to anyone working on a Ph.D. dissertation or academic paper!
-"It has long been known"... I didn't look up the original reference.
- "A definite trend is evident"... These data are practically meaningless.
-"While it has not been possible to provide definite answers to the questions"... An unsuccessful experiment, but I still hope to get it published.
-"Three of the samples were chosen for detailed study"... The other results didn't make any sense.
-"Typical results are shown"... This is the prettiest graph.
-"These results will be in a subsequent report"... I might get around to this sometime, if pushed/funded.
- "In my experience"... once.
-"In case after case"... twice.
-"In a series of cases"... thrice.
-"It is believed that"... I think.
-"It is generally believed that"... A couple of others think so, too.
-"It is clear that much additional work will be required before a complete understanding of this phenomenon occurs"... I don’t understand it.
-"After additional study by my colleagues"... They don't understand it either.
- "Thanks are due to John for assistance with the experiment and to Mike for valuable discussions"... John did the work and Mike explained to me what it meant.
-"A highly significant area for exploratory study"... A totally useless topic selected by committee.
POST-GRADUATE STUDY
At NTUU KPI post-graduates are part of a strong and international post-graduate community. Being accepted for a post-graduate course at NTUU KPI is an evidence of previous academic excellence, and future potential. We seek applications from excellent students with all kinds of backgrounds.
Educational process of post-graduate study is managed by Inter-Branch Institute of Post-Graduate Education and maintained by University Institutes and Colleges. Almost 90% of faculty and staff have scientific degrees. Educational curricula is flexible, and allow to introduce new educational courses to constantly improve and redevelop the content and the quality of courses and programs. The students have the opportunity to choose additional fields of study that helps to widen the range of their job placement.
Doctor of Philosophy Degree
Doctor of Philosophy, abbreviated Ph.D. or PhD , is an advanced academic degree awarded by NTUU KPI.
The period of study is three years full time before submission of the thesis. The candidate is required to successfully complete a number of advanced courses relevant to an area of specialization. A candidate must submit a thesis or dissertation consisting of a suitable body of original academic research, which is worthy of publication in a peer-refereed context, and to defend this work.
Admission to a Ph.D. program requires Ukrainian University Master’s Diploma in a related field with sufficiently high grades and proven research ability. An applicant is supposed to have 2 tests in one of the languages either Ukrainian, Russian, or English, and in the core subject of specialization with sufficiently high grades. All applicants shall fill in an Application, and submit copies of Passport, Diploma/Certificate, and Transcript translated either in Ukrainian, Russian, or English, and a personal statement specifying the advancement of learning and research.
Doctor of Science Degree
Doctor of Science, usually abbreviated D.Sc., Sc.D, S.D. or Dr.Sc., is an academic research degree awarded in recognition of a substantial and sustained contribution to scientific knowledge.
The period of study is three years full time before submission of the thesis. A candidate must submit a thesis or dissertation consisting of a original academic theory, research, and publications, and to defend this work.
Admission to a D.Sc. program requires Ph.D. Degree in a related field. An applicant shall be required to give a proof of distinction by some original contribution to the advancement of science and learning. An applicant shall specify the published works, providing a summary of the field of research covered by these works in Ukrainian, Russian, or English. All applicants shall fill in an Application, and submit copies of Passport, Diplomas/Certificates, and Transcripts translated either in Ukrainian, Russian, or English.
